The Lane Drifter, or: Physics Is a Suggestion

FIELD OBSERVATION No. 002 โ€” STATUS: VERIFIED, LOGGED, DESPAIRING

Ranger's log, 0712 hours. Positioned on the interstate for routine observation. Within four minutes, contact: a sedan occupying one and one-third lanes, drifting with the serene confidence of a creature that believes paint is decorative. The lane markings โ€” reflective, expensive, installed by professionals โ€” mean nothing to this animal. To the Lane Drifter, the dashed white line is not a boundary. It is ambiance.

0719 hours. Observed the subject approach a merge. For most drivers, a merge is a cooperative maneuver. For the Lane Drifter it is a hostage negotiation in which he is both the negotiator and the hostage-taker, and the hostage is everyone's morning. He neither yields nor commits. He simply exists at the merge point, at exactly the speed of the car beside him, radiating entitlement, until physics โ€” which he regards as one option among many โ€” resolves the standoff on his behalf.

The Subspecies

Years of field work have established three dominant variants:

1. The Signal-Optional Drifter

Believes the turn signal is a premium feature he declined at purchase. Changes lanes the way continents do: gradually, without announcement, and with total indifference to whatever is already there. When he does signal, it is after the maneuver is complete โ€” less an indication of intent than a press release about something that already happened.

2. The Last-Second Exit Diver

Travels in the leftmost lane until the exact moment his exit materializes, then crosses four lanes of traffic in one continuous diagonal, like a shooting star, if shooting stars had no insurance. Field recordings of this maneuver capture a distinctive sound: every other driver on the road saying a word we are contractually required to render as "wow."

3. The Emotional Support Cruiser

Maintains a steady 47 miles per hour. In the left lane. Forever. He is not passing anyone. He will never pass anyone. He has achieved a state of perfect stillness-in-motion that monks pursue for decades, and he has done it in exactly the spot designed for people in a hurry. Behind him stretches a caravan of despair eleven vehicles long. He is at peace. He is the only one.

1147 hours. Subject from this morning re-acquired, now straddling the line between a turn lane and a through lane, keeping both futures open like a quantum particle. Ranger morale: low.

The Certified Truth

Here the Field Guide must reproduce, verbatim, the oldest law of the road โ€” peer-reviewed by every driver who has ever lived:

Everyone driving slower than you is an idiot. Everyone driving faster than you is a maniac.

Sit with the math on that one. That law is in force from every driver's seat simultaneously. Which means at this exact moment, to the car behind you, you are the Emotional Support Cruiser. To the car ahead, you are the maniac. There is no speed at which you are innocent. There is no lane in which you are the good guy.

You are somebody's field observation right now.

Sighting verified. Coordinates logged. The paint was never a suggestion โ€” you were.
